Summary
Originally opened in 1982, the Sam Viersen Center has been home to 17 national championship teams at the University of Oklahoma. As the gymnastics program continued to grow, the facility underwent a two-phase renovation to create a modern, dedicated training environment.
The project added 11,700 gross square feet of new construction, significantly expanding the center’s footprint. Phase 1 included a new sports performance room with a 16-foot glass garage door, men’s and women’s locker rooms, showers, restrooms, hydrotherapy areas, film rooms, team suites, and lounges. A state-of-the-art sports medicine suite and team meeting room were also added to support training, recovery, and collaboration. The main lobby was reimagined with a full-height curtain wall glazing system showcasing the program’s national championship trophy display, while the original statue was relocated to a new entry and placed on a custom brick and cast stone pedestal.
Phase 2 renovated portions of the existing building, converting former locker rooms and hydrotherapy spaces into offices, coaches’ locker rooms, and a dedicated laundry room. Together, these upgrades provide the University of Oklahoma Gymnastics program with a versatile, high-performance facility that supports athletic excellence while honoring its legacy.
