Summary
In 2013 a devastating tornado hit Moore, OK and one of the buildings destroyed was the Highland East Junior High Gymnasium. Moore Public Schools needed to rebuild the gymnasium on a highly accelerated schedule in order to open for the start of the school year in August 2014.
The school building covers 21,000 square feet, with a gymnasium area covering 8,600 square feet. The gymnasium includes bleacher seating, six basketball goals, and digital scoreboards.
Student, staff, and community safety was paramount in the rebuilt high school so a storm shelter covering 3,510 square feet was built, comprising of one classroom, a concession area, and male and female public restrooms. The area south of the gymnasium consists of lockers, showers, and restrooms, plus a wrestling room. This area also house coach and teacher office areas, as well as a large storage area.
